FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Tense moments in Southeast Fresno as an uncooperative suspect forced Fresno police to use non-lethal force to arrest him.
Officers were first called to the scene around 9:20 am. AMFOX 26 was told that a person at Olive and Chestnut was acting erratically and believed he had a firearm in his waistband.
According to Captain Joe Alvarez, officers arrived at that time.
“Upon arrival, officers attempted to contact the suspect, but he refused to comply,” Alvarez said. “He started walking up and down the street from Chestnut and Olive all the way to McKinley.”
The man, identified as Derike Crumpler, then pulled out a knife and pointed it at officers before throwing it over a fence.
It was at this point….
“Officers used de-escalation tactics and were able to safely take him into custody,” Alvarez said.
These tactics include using non-lethal ammunition to take out Crumpler.
“So officers are always trained to gain compliance, to understand and safely protect the community,” Alvarez said. “They set up a perimeter to prevent the individual from contacting anyone else and then attempted to delay the call to communicate.”
These preparations made the situation calmer than it could have been.
“I am very pleased with the way the officers maintained their composure and composure,” Alvarez said. “This could have ended very, very badly because the individual was disobeying commands, was very aggressive, and they used remote communications, were able to de-escalate and take him safely into custody.”
Before his arrest, Crumpler had already been released on parole. He is currently in custody for delaying or obstructing a police officer, as well as other pending charges.
