Staying calm and centered during the hustle and bustle of the holidays may seem impossible, but it is achievable once you know how to put effective stress relief techniques into practice.

Life coach Beth-Ann Falconer says a lot of stress and anxiety is expected because there’s a lot going on in the season, but that doesn’t mean you should let yourself be overwhelmed.

“The key is to calm yourself down, remind yourself of the bigger picture, not bow to the pressure, and remember that it’s just a few days of enjoyment, and then life will get back to normal,” she said. “It is this normality that you have to keep in your mind at all times, so that you can stay grounded.”

She suggests these techniques to help you stay calm and centered during the holidays:

Deep breathing exercises

How to do it: Breathe in deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold for a count of four, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six to eight. Repeat five to ten times.

Why it works: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces stress and calms your mind.

Practice gratitude

How to do that: Write down three things you are grateful for every day. Focus on positive moments, no matter how small.

Why it works: Shifting your focus to gratitude can improve your mood and reduce anxiety.

Move your body

Take a brisk walk, dance to your favorite holiday playlist, or do some yoga. Even 10-15 minutes of exercise can release endorphins and relieve tension.

Set boundaries

Politely say “no” to unnecessary obligations or tasks that overwhelm you. This season, prioritize what matters most to you.

Schedule ‘me-time’

Take 15-30 minutes for yourself every day, whether you enjoy a cup of tea, meditate, read or listen to soothing music.

Aromatherapy

Use essential oils such as lavender, peppermint or eucalyptus to create a relaxing atmosphere. You can diffuse them, add them to a bath or apply diluted oils to your wrists.

Mindfulness or meditation

How to do that: Sit quietly, concentrate on your breathing or follow a guided meditation via an app.

Why it works: Helps you stay in the present moment and reduces vacation overwhelm.

Smile often

Watch a funny holiday movie or spend time with people who cheer you up. Laughter can significantly reduce stress hormones.

Simplify your to-do list

Break tasks into smaller steps, delegate where possible and let go of perfectionism. Focus on what really brings joy.

Connect with loved ones

Spend quality time with friends or family, even if it’s virtual. Meaningful connections can reduce feelings of stress and loneliness.
