How to watch today’s big DJI drone launch – and what to expect

DJI may have just released the DJI Mini 4K, which we considered the best budget drone for beginners, but we’re already moving on to the next announcement – which you can watch today.

The Chase the View event trailer doesn’t explicitly say it will be a drone event, but the title and image suggest it will be a new flying camera. More importantly, we’ve seen several leaks about the DJI Air 3S drone recently, so it seems highly likely that this mid-range drone will officially land today.

DJI’s Air series sits between the smaller Mini series and the high-end Mavic range – and in many ways has been the traditional favorite for most people. The DJI Air 3 launched in July 2023, so it’s not exactly an old model – which is why DJI will likely release an “S” model rather than the DJI Air 4.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Air 3S, if we see it today, isn’t a potentially exciting model for aerial photographers and videographers. Recent leaks suggest it may launch with a new tracking accessory that will allow the drone to follow you without having to hold a bulky controller.

So if you’re interested in drones, aerial photography or impressive gadgets, today’s DJI launch is worth watching…

How to watch today’s DJI launch

The best way to watch the DJI “Chase the View” event is on the DJI YouTube channel. The livestream will begin at 9am ET / 2pm BST / 11pm AEST on Tuesday, October 15, and if previous DJI launches are any indication, it shouldn’t last much longer than 10-15 minutes.

What can we expect at today’s DJI launch?

Recent leaks suggest that the DJI event will almost certainly be dedicated to the DJI Air 3S – but that may not be the only new thing we’ll see.

The most interesting feature of the DJI Air 3S may be the leaked RC Track controller. A small handheld warning light that can replace buzzing controllers when your drone just needs to follow you on bike rides, runs, and more.

This means the Air 3S launch could also be of interest to current DJI owners, as there is a suggestion that the RC Track could one day be compatible with other models such as the Mini 4 Pro.

If you’re mainly interested in the Air 3S, other leaks and rumors suggest that the lidar technology is intended to improve obstacle avoidance accuracy, as well as increase internal storage to a generous 42GB (up from 8GB on the Air 3).

We also expect the Air 3S’s main camera to feature a larger 1-inch sensor, which will improve dynamic range and low-light performance, although the telephoto lens is expected to retain the same 1/1.3-inch sensor as before).

So if you’re traveling alone and want to take aerial travel souvenirs, or just want to expand your horizons as a photographer or videographer, it’s worth attending a DJI event today – see you there and we’ll share all our first impressions with you.
