BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston’s Old North Church is an iconic landmark tied to the American Revolution, but beneath it lies a creepy secret.
Juliana Mazza from 7 offers a glimpse into a mysterious crypt under the church that is gaining mass appeal.
“Most people know the Old North for one lantern signal over land and the second over sea,” Nikki Stewart of Old North Illuminate told 7NEWS. “I think many of our visitors are surprised to hear that we have this historic crypt underneath the church.”
Archaeologists estimate that more than a thousand people were buried in the church centuries ago.
For those interested, the church offers guided tours after dark.
“When you’re here at night and the church is just creaking and groaning, you hear these sounds, it kind of sticks in your head,” Stewart said, adding that a former employee was scared for his job when he saw two figures saw. looked at him from the church gallery.
You can visit the crypt on any day of the week. After-dark tours are only offered through Saturday.
