PHETCHABUN: Volunteer rescuers on Sunday morning rescued a newborn baby found abandoned in a grassy area in the northern province’s Lom Sak district.

Kok Sai Rescue Volunteers staff received a call from a good Samaritan that a newborn baby had been found in an open grassy area near a second-hand goods store in Tambon Wat Pah at 7 a.m.

Rescuers searched the area and found a large plastic bag containing a girl wrapped in a towel lying in a plastic sink.

“I was shocked and happy when I found her and knew she was still alive and safe. Her body was clean and the umbilical cord had already been cut,” said rescuer Smitanan Singsee, adding that the newborn was taken to Lomsak Hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

After receiving the report, volunteers went to the child’s mother’s house, but there was no one at home. They found an umbilical cord and traces of blood clots in the trash can.

Officials with the Department of Children and Youth Services said the child’s mother, whose name was withheld, was admitted to a local hospital and is investigating why she abandoned the child.
