Michigan basketball makes an impression in the first game of the Dusty May era

After discussing the offseason personnel overhaul for UM’s hoops program, Tony and Rainer talk about Michigan’s dominant 101-53 win over Cleveland State.

Michigan football fought back from a two-touchdown halftime deficit, but the second-half comeback fell short undefeated No. 10 Indiana.

Michigan fell to Indiana 20-15 on Saturday, falling to .500 at 5-5 with two games remaining. The Glutton lost two right after I fell No. 1 Oregon last week. Indiana is now 10-0 for the first time in program history to maintain a strong chance of reaching the Big Ten championship game.

Michigan started the game with a field goal, but Indiana then dominated the first half. Kurtis Rourke connected on two touchdown passes with Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. and turned an Alex Orji fumble into a field goal. Michigan had just 94 yards in the first half and quarterback Davis Warren completed 7 of 18 passes after completing five of six on the opening drive.

Zeke Berry started the second half with an interception deep in Indiana territory, leading to a second Dominic Zvada field goal. On the next possession, Zvada tied his career high by making a 56-yard field goal to cut the deficit to eight. Michigan scored its first touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a Kalel Mullings run, but the two-point conversion couldn’t preserve Indiana’s slight lead. Indiana added a field goal in the final three minutes and got a final defensive stop to secure the win.

Michigan has lost four of its past five games, with its lone win coming against Michigan State, and must win one of its last two games to make a bowl game. Michigan is now 58-11 all-time against the Hoosiers and a three-game winning streak was snapped.

Michigan vs. Indiana live updates, game highlights

The Wolverines couldn’t move the ball down the field and gave it back to Indiana after picking up just one first down. Davis Warren missed passes on first, second and third and found Payton O’Leary on fourth-and-10, but only gained nine yards. Michigan still has all three timeouts, leaving a slim chance to get the ball back.

Indiana extended its lead to five points with a 41-yard field goal after a nice punt return set up the Hoosiers in Michigan territory. Indiana got one first, but Elijah Sarratt dropped a fade near the goal line that could have allowed the Hoosiers to burn the clock and possibly take a two-score lead.

Michigan starts the drive from its own twenty. The Wolverines have all three timeouts and the two-minute warning.

Michigan has. The Wolverines forced another Indiana three-and-out after two TJ Guy sacks, and the Hoosiers’ punt went just 26 yards, giving the ball to Michigan at IU’s 34. Donovan Edwards carried Michigan inside the 10-yard line , aided by a personal foul against Indiana, before switching to Mullings to overturn it with two runs on the third and fourth goals. Michigan took to the air to try for a two-point conversion, but Davis Warren was nearly intercepted.

Michigan got another defensive stop, this time a punt, and drove back into Indiana territory just far enough to reach the range of Zvada, who had enough leg to make his career-high and third-best field goal of the game. The 12-play drive only went 44 yards with most of it coming on the ground from Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards.

Michigan ran it three straight after turnovers and gained just four yards and had two rushes for no gain. Instead of trying to go for it from the Indiana 3-yard line to make it a one-score game, Michigan settled for a 22-yard field goal from Dominic Zvada to cut the deficit to 11.

Michigan’s defense had the first big play of the second half. The Wolverines had to punt on the opening possession after one first down, but held Indiana at its own 4-yard line with the punt. On Indiana’s first play, Kurtis attempted a short snap on Rourke, but Berry jumped the route for an interception at Indiana’s 7-yard line.

Michigan’s defense was able to limit the damage after the fumble and hold Indiana to a 40-yard field goal. Indiana seemingly reached the goal line on a completion over the middle from Myles Price, but compensatory penalties negated the gain of 13 yards to the 2-yard line, and Indiana ultimately had to settle for a field goal.

Michigan is in danger of falling into a huge hole. After quarterback Davis Warren made a string of six consecutive incompletions to pick up a first down, the Wolverines subbed Alex Orji on the next snap and he was leveled into a QB keeper’s hole and fumbled. Indiana recovered it at Michigan’s 33 with a chance to extend the lead. Head coach Sherrone Moore disputed the call, but video review quickly confirmed it.

Michigan kicked it back to Indiana after the touchdown and the Hoosiers struck again. Kurtis Rourke stood tall in the pocket and absorbed a strike from Mason Graham to deliver a deep ball to Sarratt, who beat Jyaire Hill on the outside with a double move. Judge Ellison took a first down the ground and Rourke completed two short passes before sending it deep.

The Hoosiers shook off the cobwebs and drove 75 yards in seven plays to find the end zone and take the lead. Indiana started the drive on the ground, but then Kurtis Rourke found Ke’Shawn Williams on consecutive plays, including a 26-yard gain on a toe-tapping catch on the sideline to reach the red zone. Three plays later, Rourke hit Omar Cooper Jr. with a fade and he picked off Zeke Berry for the touchdown.

The first ten minutes were all Michigan.

Indiana got the ball first and had to punt after one first down. Michigan put together a 14-play, 66-yard drive and got inside the Indiana 5-yard line, but a Davis Warren fumble on third-and-goal forced the Wolverines to settle for a 39-yard field goal. Warren completed five of six passes for 64 yards on the drive, starting with two first-down completions to Colston Loveland and hitting Tyler Morris and Fredrick Moore for 16-yard gains.

Star cornerback Will Johnson is out for a third straight game with a foot injury while fellow starting corner Jyaire Hill is listed as questionable.

The other Wolverines listed are wide receiver Amorion Walker, safety Jaden Mangham, linebacker Micah Pollard, safety Rod Moore, linebacker Christian Boivan, tackle Jeff Persi and tight end Hogan Hansen.

Indiana left guard Drew Evans was listed with a season-ending injury.

Pregame notes between Michigan and Indiana

Last week’s loss to Oregon once again exposed Michigan’s shortcomings on offense, while the Ducks were hyper-efficient on offense in the first half and came away with a comfortable win. The Wolverines stick with quarterback Davis Warren and will look to get the game going against Indiana’s talented defensive line.

Although their top goals are far out of reach now Michigan is playing for pride, and to spoil Indiana and Ohio State’s playoff hopes and making it to a bowl game. Also, players try to improve their draft stock.

It will be another tough game for the anemic Michigan. Indiana ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense, allowing teams at 13.67 points per game, and third in total defense, allowing 261 yards per game.

The defense has laid the foundation, but Indiana’s offense has been strong with sixth-year and Ohio transfer Kurtis Rourke under center. Michigan’s secondary school got beat up last week without Will Johnson and Jyaire Hill, and Johnson remains out for this game.

Michigan vs. Prediction Indiana, choices

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: If the front of the jersey said “USC” instead, this team would be in the top five. Cignetti doesn’t mind stepping up, Rourke is a veteran quarterback making his 43rd start and the Hoosiers defense loves to ruin a quarterback’s afternoon (just ask MSU’s Aidan Chiles). Maybe UM will shut it down early, but more likely there will be an outcome that seems inevitable. The choice: Indiana 34, UM 17.
