There were eleven measures for the entire state referred to the vote by Arizona’s legislative Republicansbut only a few were successful.
Four of the ballot measures were successful and seven failed. Republican House Speaker Ben Toma (R-Peoria) said this is because the party decided to use its resources to win key legislative races instead of building support for the proposals.
Toma said that on more complex voting proposals, voters tend to vote “no” unless they fully understand the question.
“If voters don’t understand a proposal, the easiest thing to do is vote no, that’s the first piece, and it takes a lot of resources to convince voters to vote yes on a lot of these issues that don’t speak for themselves. ”, said Toma.
Measures that have failed include a proposal that would have ended judicial retention elections, a proposal that would have changed the governor’s powers during the state of emergency, and another proposal that changed how much restaurants must tip employees pay.
The four successful legislative referrals were Prop 314 on border security, Prop 312 on penalties for child sex trafficking, Prop 312 on property taxes and Prop 311 on death benefits for first responders.
