Google only introduced its new Contextual Replies program in December.
This tool generates automatic replies to a conversation based on what the conversation is about.
For example, if the caller includes a note that he or she is calling to confirm the doctor’s appointment, you can send a message back with the touch of a button to provide that confirmation.
You can also use more general answers, such as ‘call me back later’ or ‘who’s calling?’.
Now it appears from a report from 9to5Googlethe software is about to take the next steps towards full AI responses.
Google Pixel phones will reportedly receive AI responses that work in connection with the Call Screen feature (informally called Dobby in a reference to the elf in Harry Potter).
Sequences of code have been discovered in the beta version 153 of the phone’s operating system.
The new code will apparently include the new features using Gemini Nano.
Little is known about how it will work, with the string only creating facilities to turn AI Replies on and off.
But it is believed it will adopt Contextual Replies’ platform more broadly, using generative AI to expand the software’s understanding.
Google has previously suggested it could introduce something called ‘multi-turn conversational AI’.
In practice, this would mean that the AI could have lengthy conversations with a caller, without you even having to pick up the phone.
It’s not clear whether this requires user input, such as choosing between several possible answers, or whether this is done independently, with a record of the conversation delivered to the user afterwards.
Another useful feature is screening calls for spam numbers and cold callers, which can then be filtered out before they reach the user.
It comes after experts warned Android users of an attack on their bank accounts completely taking over their phones.
