NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – The 33rd annual Cycle-Smart Northampton Cyclocross race started Saturday at Look Park.
The two-day event is one of the oldest races of its kind in the country, with entertainment for spectators, food trucks, beer gardens and plenty of vantage points for the races.
We spoke with Ellen Noble, the event’s marketing and expo coordinator, who told us that while the race has changed over time, its core values have remained the same.
“The event has changed with the landscape of the sport, but honestly it has always been super committed to family fun and super high quality racing.”
She also explained what sets Cyclocross apart from other sports.
“Cyclocross is a bit of a hybrid sport, it is a kind of road bike, but with a kind of mountain bike tire with profile. The sport of cyclocross is very dynamic, so we will have short laps of seven to eight minutes. race 30 minutes to an hour, so several laps per race and then there are short stretches where riders have to get off their bikes and run.
There were 22 winning athletes on Saturday, and 22 more will be added on Sunday. They each receive prizes, including jerseys and large podium cookies.
