New veterans monument inaugurated in Massanutten

MASSANUTTEN, Va. (WHSV) – The Massanutten Property Owner’s Association, in partnership with other organizations, has transformed a portion of Hopkins Park in Massanutten to honor those who have served in the armed forces.

Veterans Day – also known as Armistice Day – gets its recognition because of an armistice signed by Germany that marked the end of World War I. At the time, World War I was believed to be the ‘War to End All Wars’. However, history shows several armed conflicts since World War I, including World War II.

116 years later, people are celebrating and honoring the lives of men and women who made sacrifices to protect the freedoms of many. Joel Hensley, 5th District Supervisor for Rockingham County, spoke at the dedication. In his speech, Hensley mentioned the bond he has with the armed forces and an important lesson he has learned from his family.

“We gather in recognition of the profound truth that freedom is not free,” Hensley said. “It is earned, it is protected, and it is protected by the brave men and women who answer the call to serve.”

Hensley said their stories helped him learn important skills like determination. Although Hensley himself is not currently serving in the military, he said the military figures in his life have taught him what it means to be dedicated.

“The strength of a veteran is not only in the moments of battle, but also in the endurance to keep going,” Hensley said. “To serve with heart and face both visible and invisible challenges with steadfast determination.”

Hensley honored the veterans present at the event and said veterans of all types should be remembered for their service.

“Every veteran, whether he served in combat, in peacetime or in critical support roles, carries with him his own unique story of dedication,” said Hensley. “Some stories are celebrated, others are quiet yet equally powerful.”
