A broken electricity pole dangles above the bus stop in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A man living in Birmingham fears a utility pole dangling over a bus stop in front of his home will fall and hurt someone.

He says he’s been trying to get it removed for months, but still nothing. So he contacted WBRC.

The pole is about four to five feet tall and just hangs in the air. One wrong move and it could fall over.

“If that pole were to fall, someone is going to get hurt and it won’t be a scratch,” Gene Davis said.

That pole, along with half of his front yard, was destroyed in March due to someone’s negligence.

“When a car drove through and took out my mailbox, he took out the post, drove all the way down and took out the fence there,” he said. “The front of the car went into the ground. They jumped out and left.”

All repairs took months, but the dangling pole has not yet been repaired.

Davis says Alabama Power came to replace their line, they put in a new pole. Unfortunately, they told him they couldn’t touch the old pole because AT&T had wires on it.

So now there’s a new stake in the ground and an old one up in the air.

Davis says he initially contacted AT&T about the issue seven months ago. He has received a claim number, but is still waiting for help.

“It’s hanging above a bus stop!” he added. “When people come there to catch the bus, they stand on my doorstep and that’s right under that pole. If that pole were to fall, it would be a disaster.”

Davis says the bus stops in front of his house several times a week and the chance of someone getting hurt increases every day.

“I think AT&T needs to do their job and come get that piece,” Davis said. “It won’t take long because they have a box truck. They can go out there and get it! We don’t have anything that we can use to go up there and take that pole down. If I had, I would have removed it myself.”

WBRC contacted AT&T on Monday. We have contacted a representative who is investigating the issue. As soon as we have an update, we will inform you.
