Meteor appears to streak across Calgary sky

Some Calgarians spotted what appeared to be a meteor streaking across the sky early Wednesday morning.

Multiple CTV News viewers submitted video showing a light moving across the sky above the city just after 6:30 a.m.

A bright flash is seen lighting up the night sky, before fading back into darkness and disappearing from view.

Shannon Bibe captured video of the event with her camera in the backyard of her home in the Richmond community. Bibe said she didn’t see the fireball firsthand, but this is the first time she has captured an event like this on her camera.

The Walia family also sent an image of the meteor – describing it as a ‘fireball’ – which could be seen looking south from their home in the northwest part of the city.

They said they checked their home’s camera after hearing about a possible meteor sighting on the news.

According to the American Meteor Society (AMS), the Northern Taurids meteor shower is currently active and is expected to peak tonight.

The AMS said it was received 115 reports of a fireball seen across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, along with several northern states.
