CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) — A plane crashed along a busy road in Chattanooga on Tuesday evening, but both occupants survived the crash, the Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) said.
The crash happened just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Shallowford Road and Airport Road, near the Chattanooga Airport.
The Chattanooga Fire Department said the Cessna Skyhawk’s engine failed and the plane crashed about a half-mile from the nearest runway.
The department says one person was out of the plane when they arrived on scene, and another man had to be removed.
They tell us firefighters cut off pieces of metal and removed part of the plane to free the victim.
CFD says both people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Hamilton County’s 911 page lists the crash in the 4600 block of Shallowford Road, west of the airport and east of Lakewood Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
CFD says the plan managed to avoid traffic on Shallowford Road and crashed on the side of the road near the intersection of Shallowford and Airport Road.
The department tells us a small fuel leak has been stopped.
Viewer Valentyna Wilbanks shared a video of the crash scene:
The video shows a small white plane lying on its side.
The website FlightAware identifies the plane as a Cessna Skyhawk, owned by AeroChatt LLC.
The City of Chattanooga Transportation Department announced that Shallowford Road near the crash site will be closed until further notice and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area entirely.
This is a developing story that we will update as we learn more.
