lawsuit
A fifth former Walker County corrections officer will plead guilty in connection with the death of inmate Tony Mitchell.
Grayson Colin Woods was charged with deprivation of rights under color of law. He is alleged to have failed to take reasonable steps to warn authorities about Mitchell’s harmful and cruel conditions of detention.
Mitchell was arrested after a family member called asking for welfare benefits. He died 2 weeks later in prison.
A lawsuit filed after Mitchell’s death alleged he was mistreated, and the Walker County coroner ruled the death a homicide.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Woods faces up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. A trial date has not yet been set for him to formally plead guilty.
