Two men have been charged with theft during a police crackdown on shoplifting in Glasgow city centre.
Officers carried out a day of action in the city center alongside Retailers Against Crime on Tuesday 26 November, carrying out checks against prolific offenders.
A 38-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the theft from a property in St Enoch Square.
A 24-year-old man was subsequently charged in connection with the theft from a property on Buchanan Street.
Both men will be reported, officers said.
Chief Inspector John McCartin said: “This action is an excellent example of how we work closely with retail and city center business partners to deter, prevent and investigate retail crime.
“We now have a team of crime prevention officers, led by a sergeant, dedicated to tackling shoplifting in the city.
“The team, supported where necessary by other community officers, will continue to work with retailers in all areas of the city centre, from small convenience stores to multinational supermarkets, and will be the point of contact to assist if retailers have an issue requiring their attention.
“This includes providing up-to-date crime-fighting material and advice, and sharing best practice.
“If you are experiencing any issues with shoplifting, please contact us as we use all information we receive to respond as and when required.
“Every week our officers make shoplifting arrests and bring those responsible to justice and will continue to do so.
“We would encourage those working in the retail sector to come forward and report any criminal activity, with the assurance that all reports will be thoroughly investigated.”
Speaking on behalf of Retailers Against Crime, a not-for-profit national partnership, National Operations Manager Stephanie Karte said: “The aim of the day of action is to target the area’s most prolific perpetrators of retail crime by working in partnership with Police Scotland. , our members and relations.
“Over the course of the day we aim to detect, prevent, disrupt and divert prolific offenders through this targeted approach repeated quarterly across Glasgow city centre.
“Previous days of action were a great success, deterring and arresting individuals wanted by police.
“This in turn builds relationships between retailers and Police Scotland and helps keep the public safe in the city.”
