Bedford woman charged after saving a dozen cats from unsanitary ‘shed’

State police say a Bedford County woman is facing charges after more than a dozen cats were allegedly found living in unsanitary conditions.

In April, police seized 19 cats from the home of 72-year-old Barbara Jean Smith on Dogwood Road in Bedford Township.

According to the statement, police say the cats were kept in a “shed” covered in feces and urine, and many of them did not have access to clean food and water.

Court records available online show Smith has been charged with more than 90 crimes, including multiple counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

She was charged on Monday and released on unsecured bail.
