Austal holds a groundbreaking ceremony for its newest facility in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Austal officially broke ground on its newest modular manufacturing facility on Wednesday.

The new building is over 360,000 square feet. And it will be used to build submarines. Once again, we help prepare for the future and invest in Mobile.

“This is simply an opportunity for our community and citizens to take part in this and continue to grow with Austal. So we’re very excited to be here. Excited to perform at Austal. It’s just another exciting day in the city of Mobile,” said Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson was one of several special guests, including Austal USA President Michelle Kruger and Representative Jerry Carl.

“For mobile and this area, it’s huge. This takes us in a completely new direction: submarines. In Congress, we had a serious problem building submarines fast enough. So this is definitely an answer we came up with a few months ago. It’s coming and we’re excited about it,” Carl said.

And we mentioned jobs. Austal plans to hire more than a thousand new employees to help with the new facility.

For Stimpson, it’s a testament to the relationship between Austal and the city.

“Supporting production and making mobile devices open to business is about community spirit. I would say that even though I only have about 13 months left, I would be surprised if we don’t make more groundbreaking work. I don’t know what it is right now, but we’ll be there when it happens,” Stimpson said.
