Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, though separated, continue to co-parent their son Azad Rao Khan. Kiran Rao, the director of Laapataa Ladies, described co-parenting as a bit “tough” due to Aamir’s busy schedule. She said she did the primary parenting even when they were together. However, she acknowledged that the superstar has become more involved now, even if he doesn’t want to know about Azad’s school.
On Kareena Kapoor’s chat show What Women Want, Kiran explained, “It’s tricky. He’s a very busy dad. To be honest, even when we were married, I did a lot of the actual primary parenting. When we separated and after divorced I think Aamir also kind of realized how much of that he’s going to have to deal with in his life because when you live together in the same house, it’s managed somehow.
Kiran also said that she can now “relax and leave Azad” with Aamir as their co-parenting has become “smoother” and Aamir is “much more involved and aware.” She said, “But making time for Azad has become a much more conscious decision lately.”
‘Only Aamir doesn’t know anything about school. I think it’s a big part of a father’s problem school ka matt bolna (Don’t ask me about school). I will do everything else,” she said.
Reflecting on her experience as a single parent, Kiran said it wasn’t much of a challenge as “Azad is a good kid,” adding, “Because in some ways it was just him and me, because I’m a single mother We have known each other very well for so long. The great thing about being a single mother is that you build a great bond with your child. We are each other’s support system. When I’m sad, I want nothing more than to just hang out with him and I can also tell him, ‘Listen, I’m feeling really down.’”
Kiran praised Azad’s empathetic nature and hinted at his humorous side, admitting, “He makes me laugh like crazy.” Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao got married in 2005 and welcomed Azad in 2011. The couple divorced in 2021. They share a very friendly relationship.
In the meantime, Kiran Rao returned to direction with Laapataa Ladies. The film was selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars.
