Some places are just for movie magic.
Such is the case for a certain home in Altadena, California. The grand, colonial home – nicknamed The Rubio House for its location on Rubio Street – is an iconic home that has been featured in many television shows and films.
The storied history of the house is part of it The house of … a documentary film of Tommy Avalone and narrated by Jason Lee, looking at some of the most famous homes from television and film. In the documentary, owners Liz and Mike discuss what it’s like to own a famous home.
“We have family and friends from all over the country calling and texting, ‘I saw your house.’ I mean, everyone knows the house,” says Liz. “To think that the house itself is famous makes me very proud.”
Here are some moments from screen history that you might recognize from the Rubio House.
‘7th heaven’

The house was featured in the 1990s television series 7th heaven was almost a character in itself. In the show, the house is given to the growing family by the church and is contingent on the Camdens staying with their church and community.

‘American pie’

American pie‘s raucous house parties were filmed at Altadena’s house. “Stifler went from the entryway to what we call the den, from the den to the living room,” says owner Liz, explaining the layout of the house in the 1999 film. As she walks into the backyard, she sees the balcony part of the pee scene.
‘This is us’

The front door and entrance to the house were a focal point in a 2016 episode This is uswhich Liz shares as one of the most recent productions people are pointing out.

The front of the house was seen in a scene in It’s always sunny in Philadelphianotable because the house is rarely, even fictionally, used as real estate on the East Coast.
‘Cheaper per dozen’

The house is ideal for a large family, as evidenced by its use in 2003 Cheaper per dozenin which Steve Martin tries to survive a morning with his horde of children.
‘I know who killed me’

Ethan Embry revisited the house as part of The house of… and remembered the 1998 filming I can hardly wait. The party scene in the country house was an important scene from the film, but owners Mike and Liz don’t remember it well.
