KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Every year, scouts from Scouting America, also known as the Boy Scouts of America until next spring, place flags on the graves of veterans to honor them for their service and sacrifice.
“We want to honor and thank everyone who has chosen to serve, and by bringing out these Scouts and all the community volunteers today, it gives them a way to honor those who have served,” said Hugh Nystrom of Scouting America.
The scouts know that this is a way to commemorate those brave men and women.
“It’s just important to honor veterans who died for our country, and to be able to remember people who we didn’t necessarily know can still make a difference to people who did know them,” one of the scouts said.
There were several veterans present who did their part to honor their fellow soldiers.
“It’s incredible to see them come here and honor their country like this, and I just want to be a part of it, so I get to come and help every year,” said Navy veteran James Cheroksy.
Family members come to these graves to visit loved ones and are grateful that the next generation is honoring them.
This has become a tradition for the scouts. Scout leaders know this will teach young Scouts how important service really is.
“It helps instill and reinforce these values of patriotism and volunteerism for all of our scouts and all of the other community volunteers who came out today to place flags,” Nystrom said.
