Clearing up what went wrong against Alabama

Brian Kelly and the LSU program suffered their third loss of the season after falling 42-13 to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

In a terrible performance on both sides of the ball, the Bayou Bengals are going back to the drawing board to dissect what went wrong and how the program can put it behind them.

For now, Kelly and Co. “disappointed” in the result and the way it was achieved.

Kelly addressed the media where he gave his initial reaction to the Week 11 42-13 loss:

Brian Kelly’s first findings

“I’ll start by saying that what we thought was going to be an exciting night turned out to be a disappointing night. I told my team that coming into the game I was definitely excited about their preparation and the way they were talking about this game, what they needed to do physically, mentally and all the things we talked about. They were ready to play.

“I take responsibility for not getting our guys in the right position tonight, and we just didn’t make the most of the opportunities we had. There were definitely a lot of things that didn’t go right tonight because we couldn’t get out coming off the field on third down, turning the ball over in attack, and it seemed like at times there were some key things in the game that weren’t going our way.

“It was one of those nights where you look at it in its entirety. Take nothing away from Alabama, they played very well, but we are now dealing with a second loss in the SEC, and we are on an uphill climb. We have As coaches we put our guys in a better position to succeed.

“That’s the challenge I have. I own that, and we have to play cleaner football. We have to get off the field. Those are the two most important things for me when it comes to the game itself. There were some untimely things that happened during the game that were again critical really set us back from the game itself, whether it was timely penalties or a third down conversion.”

Jalen Milroe’s magic crushes the Tigers

“You watch the game and you think, ‘What did these guys do for two weeks? We have a plan to stop the quarterback. We didn’t do that. So I take responsibility for it. (Defensive coordinator Blake Baker goes not to hide from the responsibility, but we also need to put our players in a position to take advantage of what they are capable of.

“We own it together and we have to fix it. Now we go into the last three games with the need to win all three and play better football in the month of November.”

What’s next for LSU?

“I think everyone’s asking the same question. We’re disappointed. We’re disappointed with the way we performed. These guys don’t say, ‘We’re out of the playoffs!’ They’re disappointed and I’m disappointed that we didn’t meet the standards of LSU football. That affects us more than the damn playoffs. When you put on the jersey for LSU, there’s a football standard and we didn’t live up to that .That’s the disappointment.”
