Most Popular Electric Vehicles in Malaysia

According to the latter JPJ data published on Malaysia Open data platform, in total 1,569 electric vehicles (EV) were registered in the month of October 2024. This corresponds to 2.09% of the total number of vehicle registrations (75,044) in October.

For the year to date (January to October 2024) a total of 17,403 EVs have been registered, compared to a total of 13,301 registered electric vehicles in 2023.

Although recent monthly EV registrations appear to be stagnant, the total number of registered EVs is expected to cross the 20,000 mark this year.

Last month, the most popular EV was the BYD Atto 3 with 205 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 191 units and the BYD Seal with 143 units. The XPeng G6 and BYD M6 entered the top 5 for the first time with 119 and 100 registered units respectively.

Priced from RM165,800, the XPeng G6 is currently the most affordable EV in Malaysia with an 800V architecture that can do DC fast charging up to 280 kW (for the Long Range model).

Meanwhile, the BYD M6 is the most affordable all-electric seven-seater MPV in Malaysia, priced from RM109,800.

BYD remains the largest EV brand in Malaysia, followed by Tesla. The Chinese EV brand has registered 2,559 Atto 3, 2,543 Seal and 1,297 Dolphin this year alone. This is followed by the Tesla which officially sells only two models. There are 2,470 Model 3 and 2,070 Model Y registered in Malaysia this year.

Other Chinese brands also maintain their positions: GWM has registered 522 units (Good Cat and 07 combined), Chery with 510 Omoda E5 and SAIC Motor has registered 394 MG4s. Other EVs in the top 10 include Smart with 510 units registered (Smart #1 and #3 combined).

BMW remains the most popular premium brand this year with a total of 410 i5s, 352 iX2, 253 Mini Countryman and 218 i4 registered.

Upcoming EV launches in Malaysia before 2024

The last two months of 2024 would be interesting to watch with the arrival of the BYD Zeeleeuw 7, Proton e.MAS7, Zeekr And Zeekr 009. All four models can now be booked from their respective dealers.

The BYD Sealion 7 is essentially a BYD Seal in a practical SUV body and we think it will cost less than RM200,000 if offered in a single-motor RWD variant.

The Proton e.MAS7 is said to be the national carmaker’s first-ever electric car, which will be launched in December with a estimated price of RM120,000. Meanwhile, the Zeekr RM180,000 And RM370,000respectively.

Several brands have also launched year-end promotions and incentives to boost electric vehicle sales. SAIC Motor Malaysia is offering discounts of up to RM26,000, and customers can now get a discount MG4 And MG ZS EV of less than RM100,000. Tesla Malaysia recently announced this EV Switcher Program which provides an additional RM10,000 discount for the Model 3 and Model Y when you trade in your petrol or diesel car.
