Long-awaited roundabout arrives at busy intersection

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) – A new roundabout or roundabout in the Noble area at a busy and sometimes dangerous intersection near Caledonia Avenue and Winsford and Dresden Roads, an area that has seen 30 accidents since 2010.

“People never stop at the stop sign.” said Charleen Khalif, who has lived at the intersection for more than 30 years. ‘It’s about time. It should have happened at the beginning of the summer, but I’m happy to see it finally happening.”

Cleveland Heights Mayor Kahlil Seren had promised the roundabout in July as part of a citywide traffic calming plan to reduce the number of crashes, including 20 fatalities over the past 15 years.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Mikyla Washington said of the roundabout in the shadow of Caledonia Elementary School. “Especially for the children who walk in the area.”

The Noble neighborhood is just one of the city’s goals to calm traffic. A few months ago, the city installed a speed bump and new signage on South Taylor Road after several serious collisions with a home where the road dead-ends in Fairmount.

The mayor writes in a newsletter that recent research shows that compact roundabouts lead to 35% fewer total accidents and 76% fewer accidents with injuries at the intersections where they are constructed. But not everyone was sold on the plan

“Traffic flows great here,” Tiquashia Meredith said. “I think a roundabout will disrupt the flow and confuse things a bit.”

The resident also complained about dangerous driving in the Caledonia region, including drifting and spinning.

“They’re circling around in that area over there, just turning and turning and turning,” Khalif said. “It’s ridiculous.”

The city will study the impact of the roundabout and will make a decision within three to six months whether the temporary roundabout will become permanent.
