Storms with heavy rain, hail and disruptions threaten KZN, WC and EC

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The weather service has warned of severe thunderstorms with hail, heavy rain and lightning in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, November 21

Impact-based alerts

The back on duty has issued a level 4 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in damage to settlements, property, vehicles, infrastructure and disruption to municipal services in the far southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to result in local damage to settlements and properties, temporary structures and difficult driving conditions in the southern and central parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Wild Coast and the adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape. A yellow level 2 warning was issued.

Meanwhile, a level 3 yellow warning was also issued for severe thunderstorms causing heavy rain. Large amounts of small hail and intense lightning are expected along the southern coast of the Western Cape.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what you can expect in your province on Thursday, November 21:

Gauteng:

Gauteng residents can expect partly cloudy and warm to hot weather in the afternoon with isolated showers and thunderstorms.

The projected UVB sunscreen index in the region is “very high.”

Residents should take necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents can expect partly cloudy and warm conditions with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, but hot in some places in the lowveld.

Limpopo:

It will be a nice day and warm to hot, but very hot in places.

Northwestern Province:

Northwest residents expect partly cloudy, breezy and warm to hot weather. From the afternoon it will be cloudy with isolated rain and thunderstorms.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot conditions, becoming cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon, but isolated in the far west and north.

Northern Cape:

The day starts with morning fog patches along the coast; otherwise it will be fine, breezy and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the far east.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect morning fog patches over the west coast; otherwise it will be partly cloudy and warm, but cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms along the south coast.

The projected UVB sunscreen index in the region is ‘extreme’.

Residents should take necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Eastern Cape (western half):

In the morning there will be cloudy and warm conditions with light rain along the coast, but from the afternoon there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The weather is cloudy and warm with scattered thunderstorms.

KwaZulu-Natal:

KwaZulu-Natal residents can look forward to partly cloudy and warm to hot weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms, but isolated in the far north.

The projected UVB sunscreen index in the region is ‘high’.

Residents should take necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.
