Earlier this year we chose the Garmin Forerunner 165 as the best running watch from 2024 in our Tom’s Guide Awards. It’s definitely one of the best Garmin’s for beginners, with excellent tracking and training advice in a lightweight and attractive watch with an AMOLED screen.

I’ve tested every watch in the Garmin range, including the entire Forerunner range, and the Forerunner 165 is the watch that offers runners the best value. The tracking proved accurate in my testing compared to more expensive watches, and the lightweight design and bright screen made it pleasant to wear during and outside of my workout.
The Forerunner 165 does not have a triathlon mode like more expensive models, such as the Garmin Forerunner 265and lacks other features like maps and some of the training analytics available on more expensive watches. However, it does the essentials of sports tracking very well and is a great fitness tracker to wear to record your general activity and sleep too.
