WhatsApp voice notes are simple, but not the most reliable option when you’re in public. But now you can simply tap on a voice chat and have it transcribed in the messaging app itself. Yes, WhatsApp now allows you to transcribe the voice notes, which will be coming to all users in the coming weeks.

The transcription feature is essentially a convenient way to get a word-by-word text note for the audio chat. These are especially useful if you record conversations and don’t want to spend hours writing them down.

Transcribing WhatsApp voice notes: how it works

By default, WhatsApp does not enable the option to transcribe voice notes. So you can go to Settings – Chats – Voice Message Transcriptions to use the new feature. The option to transcribe can be enabled manually and once you do, you’ll see the prompt below a voice note asking if you want WhatsApp to transcribe the file for you.

Once you’ve enabled it, you can follow these steps to take advantage of the new WhatsApp feature:

– You will receive a voice note

– WhatsApp will show you the option to transcribe it

– Click on download

– The voice note transcription is approximately 90 MB in size on average

– The text of the voice note is displayed below the voice file

As we tested in the beta, the WhatsApp transcription option for voice notes only works on the phone, so you won’t see the result on the web. The feature is available in 5 different languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hindi.

WhatsApp ensures that all your personal voice messages remain end-to-end encrypted. No one outside this chat, not even WhatsApp, can listen to it. You cannot share the text file with anyone, which is a positive aspect of its privacy.
