ST THOMAS, Jamaica – Low voter turnout is not much of a concern for Prime Minister Andrew Holness as he expresses confidence in a resounding victory for the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) in the Morant Bay Division.
“I’ve been driving around and like I said, just by driving around you can see there’s a low turnout. What I have seen so far is that the mood among the supporters of the Jamaica Labor Party is very high. I am confident that we have mobilized our base and our supporters and that our workers are working very hard to secure victory,” he told the Jamaica Observer shortly after arriving in the Morant Bay division.
Holness received a hero’s welcome from JLP supporters upon his arrival at Morant Bay Primary polling station in St Thomas to show support for councilor candidate Winston Downie.
The Prime Minister also said the PNP’s previous victories in the area were not of great significance.
“As you know, this area would at times be more likely to vote for the PNP, but what I have found is that there is a change and I expect that ultimately we will have a positive outcome in favor of the Jamaica Labor Party. of the exercise,” he insisted.
The energy in Morant Bay is high and the shout of ‘showa, showa’ is heard behind Holness.
“Andrew Holness’s body comes in like a milk to him and a bath inna,” one woman declared cheerfully. Another woman, after being hugged by the Prime Minister, declared to everyone: “I’m going to take a bath tonight.”
Holness declined to receive percentages or actual figures from the party workers on the ground, but said: “The indication from the party workers would be how they see the turnout, how they see the voters, what expressions they are making and we also want to know if our supporters are already then have not come out and the report so far is that everything looks good.”
