Eight don’ts to shape a better you

Eight don’ts to shape a better you

What if I told you that small changes can lead to a happier, healthier and more successful life? Often the difference between a fulfilling life and a life of regret lies in daily habits. If you want to avoid becoming a version of yourself you don’t recognize, stop now:

1. Don’t leave your smartphone notifications turned on

A constant stream of notifications can derail even the most focused mind. Whether it’s the ping of a message or the buzz of an email, distractions cost you valuable time and energy. Imagine you’re in a library, deep in an important book, and suddenly someone keeps tapping you on the shoulder every few minutes. That’s exactly what notifications do. Take them out and regain your focus!

2. Don’t just read books, study them

Reading can sometimes be like watching a movie: entertaining but fleeting. On the other hand, studying a book is like having a deep conversation with it. You absorb its lessons, underline key points, and revisit them. Think of it this way: you wouldn’t flip through a map if you were lost in the mountains; you would study the map carefully to find your way. Treat books as maps for life, and they will lead you to success.

3. Don’t skip regular exercise

The most incredible wealth is not money, but health. A friend once joked, “You spend your youth chasing wealth and your old age spending that wealth trying to get healthy again.” Exercise keeps your body fit and your mind sharp. A brisk walk, a morning stroll or even 15 minutes of stretching can work wonders. Remember, the greatest reward you can give your older self is a healthy body.

4. Don’t eat junk food

Let’s face it: junk food is tempting, but the sluggishness and bloating afterwards? Not worth it. A colleague once admitted: “I used to eat chips and soda for lunch. At 3pm I felt like a zombie!” Switching to healthy meals gave her more energy and clarity. Good food nourishes your body and mind, keeping you alert and active.

5. Don’t set the alarm to snooze

Those extra five or ten minutes may feel like heaven, but it’s a trap. Hitting snooze not only delays your awakening, but also delays your success. An entrepreneur I admire says: “The first battle of the day is with the alarm clock. If you win it, you start the day as a winner.” Get up when the alarm goes off for the first time and set the tone for a productive day ahead.

6. Disrespect your parents

Your parents are the roots of your existence, and their blessings can be life-changing. I remember a friend who constantly sought his mother’s advice before making big decisions. Once he ignored her wisdom and suffered a significant financial loss. When he finally apologized, his mother smiled and said, “A parent’s blessings are like a shield: they work best when you remember to wear them.” Respect your parents; their blessings can guide you through life’s toughest storms.

7. Don’t get into fits of anger

Anger is a thief: it steals your peace, judgment, and relationships. Think of a time when you said or did something out of anger that you later regretted. I once saw a manager yelling at his team during a presentation. He lost their trust and respect within minutes. Anger is like holding a burning coal with the intention of throwing it at someone else; it will only ultimately lead to you getting burned.

8. Don’t keep goals in mind, write them down

There is magic in writing goals. A study once found that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. A friend of mine had a simple habit: every New Year, he wrote his goals on paper and taped it to his wall. By the end of the year, most of them had been checked off. Written goals are like seeds planted in fertile soil: they grow stronger with clarity and effort.

Final thoughts

Life is not about big transformations, but about small, consistent changes. Avoiding these eight habits will not only help you stay on track, but also create a better version of yourself. Remember that the little habits you make today determine the person you will become tomorrow.
So, what’s the first habit you’ll change? Write it down and start the journey to a better future!
