Michigan gas prices drop ahead of the new year – Macomb Daily

This week marks the start of a new year and possibly even lower gas prices.

“Michigan drivers will see lower pump prices heading into the new year,” said Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group said this in the press release on Monday. “If demand falls, alongside increasing supply, gas prices could continue to fall.”

Over the weekend, Michiganders paid an average of $3.03 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which is about 7 cents lower than last week. That’s 8 cents less than this time last month, but still 11 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists pay an average of $45 for a full 15-gallon tank; a discount of about $13 from the 2023 high last August.

Compared to last week, the average daily gas price in Metro Detroit decreased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.04 per gallon, about 2 cents less than last week’s average, but still 9 cents more than the same time last year.

According to the AAA report, the state and metro gas averages showed:

• Averages of the most expensive gasoline prices: Ann Arbor ($3.05), Jackson ($3.05), Metro Detroit ($3.04)
• Least expensive gas price averages: Traverse City ($2.88), Benton Harbor ($2.94), Marquette ($2.95)

How to save on gas

• Combine errands to reduce driving time.
• Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
• Pay with cash instead of credit card. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
• Remove excess weight from your vehicle.
• Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
• Sign up for savings programs. AAA members who enroll in the Shell Fuel Rewards program can save 5 cents per gallon when they fill up with Shell.
