White Plains Public Safety shared that 2024 and 2025 models are being targeted after being abandoned on commutes. Thieves wait for the SUVs to be left in municipal parking lots during morning commutes.

Police officers said they believe the thieves are using a reprogramming tool to create new key fobs. This process is different from cloning the key fob signal when a vehicle is parked in front of a house.

The process may involve using a specialized device to program a new key fob by teaching the vehicle’s computer system to recognize a unique signal sent by the new one.

All the thieves need are the right codes to communicate with the vehicle’s computer. This process is completed with the use of OBD2 scanners. These scanners can be used to program certain functions in a car, such as key fobs, and to reset certain systems.

Some people use them to program new key fobs without having to visit a local dealer. But the scanner must be compatible with the make and model of your vehicle in order to work.

Agents are recommending that owners of CR-V models sign up for Honda Link Tracking Services, place an Apple Airtag device in their vehicle and report suspicious activity to assist law enforcement if their SUV is stolen.
