Syracuse moves closer to the Top 25 after a win over NC State

A few weeks ago, a Syracuse win at NC State would almost certainly have put them in the top 25.

However, after several losses and injuries to the Wolfpack, their supplies waned. With this, North Carolina State beating Syracuse meant a little less to voters.

But that doesn’t mean it didn’t mean anything. Orange is back to where it was in the polls before the loss to Stanford. Here’s SU’s Week 8 poll prediction:

AP Top 25

After receiving the 36th most votes last week, SU jumped three spots this week to tie with Arkansas for 33rd.

The Orange won seven more votes than last week, from six to thirteen. This was because more voters noticed SU. Two voters placed Orange in week seven, compared to six this week (three for No. 23, one for No. 24 and two for No. 25).

Looking at the rest of the rankings, Miami maintained its sixth position while the Hurricanes continued to dominate the ACC standings. SU’s next opponent, Pitt, moved into last place in the top 20 with its 6-0 record.

In the votes received section, UNLV, which SU defeated two weeks ago, received one vote.

Coaches survey

The coaches poll looked quite similar to this week’s AP Top 25 poll. The Orange also received 13 votes, which was the 31st most votes. That’s 12 votes more than SU had a week ago.

No. 6 Miami and No. 20 Pitt are the Orange’s two rivals in the rankings and occupy the same spots as in the AP poll.

UNLV got a little more recognition from the coaches, earning 12 votes. This puts the Rebels just one spot behind SU.

The most important thing

SU only has two ranked opponents this season, and Pitt is certainly the easier to beat of the two. If Syracuse can overcome this week’s woes and end the Panther’s undefeated start, the Orange will almost certainly take the field in November.
