Teach respect, discipline and hard work

This year, three seniors return for the Emery Spartans girls basketball team, who will also serve as captains: Saige Curtis, Kali Jensen and Katelyn Nielson. Jensen will bring great leadership, defense and her non-stop hustle. Nielson has been one of the top scorers in the last two seasons and Curtis is always dangerous when he shoots with the three balls. They played a ton of Varsity minutes last season and will continue to lead their team.

They played in some big games last season, gaining not only Varsity experience, but championship games as well. The team finished as runners-up state champions and entered the tournament as the fifth seed, upsetting Judge and the number one ranked Grantsville teams. They fell in the championship game to Richfield after a hard-fought match, 56-49.

Coach Jon Faimalo enters his third season as head coach and is assisted by Chase Julian and Rachel Hallows. Coach Faimalo will continue his coaching style and try to get the athletes to play as hard as possible while having fun. He will also teach his team respect, discipline and hard work.

When asked about the challenging opponents this season, he replied: “We have a tough pre-season and our region is tough too. I think every game will be a challenge.” When asked what the team has done this offseason to improve, he said, “We attended a few team camps this summer and organized a small kids camp to cover the basics teach.”

Coach Faimalo was then asked about this team’s goals and expectations for the season: “It’s tough to follow up on last year’s state runner-up finish, but we want to be one of the last teams playing for a state championship.”
